Frost & Cool Temperatures

A message from our local Bayer Market Development Agronomist, Katie Macfarlane.  A few things to consider this week with a lot of fields emerging  and some cool nights still in the forecast.  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Corn

Corn is less susceptible to frost injury before V5 (Corn growth staging guide) because the growing point remains below ground.

Assess potential yield loss  – CORN REPLANT GUIDE

Soybeans

The growing point of soybeans is exposed at emergence, so they can be more susceptible to frost damage than corn (Soy growth staging guide). However, complete death of the plant usually won’t occur unless temperatures are below -2°C for several hours.

PurYield

PurYield provides yield and bottom-line benefits in all row crop production, including corn, soybeans and wheat. PurYield is a granular Enhanced Efficiency Fertilizer that consists of urea with an innovative, proprietary polymer coating.  The release rate is driven by the soil temperature.

Advantages:

  • The polymer coating slows the natural processes of nitrogen conversion and volatilization, making nitrogen available to plants over a longer portion of the growing season, which improves uptake efficiency and minimizes environmental risks.
  • Available in different release durations according to the coating thickness, generally ranging between 30 and 90 days.
  • In harmony with 4R Nutrient Stewardship practices (rate source at the right rate, in the rate place at the right time)

Application methods:

  • Suitable for blending and all application methods utilized for standard urea.
